ORIGINATION OF THE TUTICORIN GYMKHANA CLUB
Tuticorin Gymkhana Club History
  1. The Tuticorin Gymkhana Club was established on 08.11.1929 by Shri.Chatterton - Former Superintendent of Customs
  2. Captain.Leo.S.Machado was the Founder President of the Club
  3. The land for the Club first belonged to Rao Sahib Caitin Villavarayar he then gifted the same to the Club in the year 1930
  4. A land in the heart of the city bearing Survey no.1159/2 B2C of 1.89 acres was allotted & finally alienated by the Government to the Club
  5. The foundation stone for the main building was laid by Shri.I.M.Fraser on 06.07.1929. The construction of the building was completed on 1930 & the same was named as “CHATTERTON HALL” due to the single effort of Mr.Chatterton one of the founder of the Club
  6. Rao Sahib Pappu Muthusamy Reddiar a noted Philanthropist of Tirunelveli contributed an amount of Rs.5000/- for constructing a building in the Club premises. The foundation stone for constructing the building was laid by Dewan Bahadur V.N. Viswanatha Rao M.A., B.L., - Former District Collector Tirunelveli on 14.11.1943. The building construction was completed & it was named as “RAO SAHIB PAPPU MUTHUSAMY REDDIAR HALL”. The Hall was inaugurated by Shri.K.Srinivasan I.C.S., - Former District & Session Judge Tirunelveli & the portrait of the donor was unveiled by Shri.K.M.Rajagopalan M.A., I.C.S., - Former Sub Collector Thoothukudi on 11.02.1945
  7. Shri.C.Kasiviswanatha Pandian - Maharaja of Ettaiyapuram donated Billiards Table for the Club
  8. In 1943 the Club members organised a music performance by Thirumathi.M.S.Subbulakshmi a World renowned exponent of carnatic music & with the funds collected the compound wall was constructed in 1944
  9. The Silver Jubilee of the Club was celebrated in the year 1956
  10. In 1968 M/s.V.V.Dhanushkodi Nadar & Sons donated a huge amount to convert the Verandah into a parlour & two rooms for Office & Store
  11. Volleyball court was constructed & inaugurated in the Club on 1973 by Shri.V.V.D.Nithyanandam & Shri.A.Thuraisamy - Former Director of Physical Education Kamaraj College Thoothukudi
  12. Shuttle Indoor Stadium was inaugurated in the Club on 26.02.1977 by Shri.Vaikunth - Former Superintendent of Police. Mr.Prakash Padukone - Former Indian Shuttle player played in the Court during the inauguration
  13. The Golden Jubilee of the Club was celebrated in the year 1981. Federation standard Volleyball Court was constructed with the contribution from the Club members during the Golden Jubilee Celebration
  14. New Building for Weight lifting & Gymnasium named “SIVANTHI ARANGAM” was inaugurated on 27.04.1987
  15. The foundation for Twin Shuttle Wooden Court was laid on 10.03.1991 along with Table Tennis Room by Shri.Dr.Sivanthi Adthiyan
  16. The Diamond Jubilee Building was inaugurated on 18.05.1991 by Shri.R.J.M.Pillai - Former Chairman Tuticorin Port Trust. The Diamond Jubilee Building consists of Office Room, Reading Room, T.V. Room & an air conditioned cards section
  17. In 1992 with the contribution received from Shri.Ku.Ma.Subramaniyam - Former Chief Engineer of Tuticorin Thermal Power Station both the Tennis courts were provided with floodlights
  18. Wash room was constructed with contribution received from Shri.T.Manickam & family
  19. The Twin Shuttle wooden Court & Table Tennis Room was inaugurated on 07.01.1993 by Shri.L.Gopalakrishnan - Former Chairman Indian Bank
  20. An air conditioned Billiards room named “SHRI SANKARA IYER BILLIARDS & SNOOKER HALL” was inaugurated in the year 27.04.1997 with the major sponsorship received from Shri.S.Veeramani
  21. The Platinum Jubilee of the Club was celebrated in the year 2005
  22. Basketball Court was constructed, named as “V.N.M.A.D RAMAKRISHNAN B.E., FLOODLIGHT BASKETBALL COURT” & was inaugurated by Dr.M.Sathiyaseelan - Former Director of Physical Education Loyola College Chennai on 24.10.2018 with the sponsorship received from Mr.D.R.Balan
  23. Bar in the Club premises was renovated, named as “SILK BAR” & was inaugurated on 28.01.2019
  24. Restaurant in the Club was refurbished in the month of February 2019
  25. Rest room & Dressing room separately for Men & Women was constructed in the Club premises & came into use from 10.04.2019
  26. New Genset - Genlite KOEL (62.5 KVA) was installed in our Club premises on 25.04.2019 for all section to function even in case of power failure
  27. V.V.D Ravindran Auditorium with projector facility was constructed & inaugurated on 20.10.2019 by Shri.V.V.D.Bremanandam with amount donated by V.V.D Group of Companies
  28. Volleyball Court was renovated & inaugurated by Shri.A.Thuraiswamy - Former Secretary Thoothukudi District Volleyball Association & Former Physical Director Kamaraj College Thoothukudi on 20.10.2019 with floodlight from contribution amount received from Thoothukudi District Volleyball Association
  29. Tennis Clay Court was renovated & inaugurated by Shri.G.Gragadurai - Gee Gee Salt on 20.10.2019 with sponsorship received from KTM Group of Companies & floodlights was set up with the amount received from Thoothukudi District Tennis Association
  30. Shri.V.Sankara Iyer Billiards & Snooker Hall was renovated & inaugurated by Mr.Joseph Selvaraj - Proprietor Hotel Sugam & Mr.R.Girish - Billiards Indian Rank 8th Place / World Rank 32nd Place first broke the match on 24.07.2022
  31. Jacobi Business Lounge was constructed with major sponsorship received from Mr.A.Antony Thomas - Managing Director Jacobi Carbons & was inaugurated by Mr.T.R.Thamilarasu - President All India Chamber of Commerce & Industries on 30.10.2022
  32. Gymkhana Cycle Club was inaugurated by Dr.G.Mathiprakasam B.Sc., M.B.B.S., M.N.A.M.S., - Jothi Nursing Home on 30.10.2022
  33. Manickam Memorial Synthetic Tennis Courts was resurfaced & inaugurated on 02.11.2022 by Mr.Ambal.R.Muthumani - Proprietor Ambal & Abis Coffee Virudhunagar
  34. Card section renovated & inaugurated on 15.01.2023 by Mr.G.P.Joe Prakash immediate Past President of The Tuticorin Gymkhana Club. Mr.R.Murugaraj Kannan Cards Incharge donated Rs.2.5 lakhs to name the section as Rahul Roja Recreations
  35. Pearl Restaurant renovated & inaugurated on 01.03.2023 by Mr.S.Bala Sundaram - Food & Beverages Incharge TTGC
  36. Gymkhana Fitness Studio was newly constructed & inaugurated on 23.04.2024 by Mr.P.Premvetty - M/s.Vettivel & Co. & Member of the Club and by guest of honor Mr.S.Bhaskaran - Arjuna Awardee & Former South Indian Weight Lifting Champion
  37. Gymkhana Guest House was refurbished & inaugurated by Mr.G.Mathiprakasam B.Sc., M.B.B.S., M.N.A.M.S., Managing Director - Jothi Nursing Home on 23.04.2024
  38. Ample parking facility was arranged & inaugurated on 23.04.2024
